Key points on how to clean and disinfect a broiler house

When planning to clean and disinfect a broiler house, a written, step-by-step plan can help create a healthy, sanitized breeding environment.

Benefits of an effective cleaning and disinfection program:

Minimize the impact of environmental diseases
Optimize bird performance and welfare
Safeguard feed used during the breeding period in the transfer environment to the house and holding shed

According to the Hviagen magazine guidelines

1) Set up a schedule:

A complete schedule includes a list of disinfection and cleaning steps, including the date on which they are to be carried out, the equipment required and the duration of the process in detail. This schedule should be written before the house is evacuated.

2) Insect control in the poultry house:

Wearing appropriate clothing and a protective mask, spray the interior of the poultry house with a relatively balanced insecticide recommended very soon after the houses are completely evacuated. The second stage of insecticide spraying should be carried out before the house is completely gassed.

3) Remove dust and airborne particles:

Remove all dust and cobwebs from the surfaces of the environment, especially the surfaces of the interior equipment.

4) Before spraying (gassing the house):

Again, wearing appropriate protective equipment, spray the entire interior of the house with the detergent solution until it is wet. Seal all the joints and entrances of the house to prevent dust from re-entering.

5) Remove the internal equipment:

Remove all the equipment inside the house and raise the automatic drinking and feeding lines.

6) Collect the waste and elimination items from the house and remove them from the house:

The waste disposal site should be at least 3-4 km away from the poultry house environment and disposed of in accordance with health regulations.

7) Use a high-pressure car wash with foam detergent:

Make sure that the detergent is compatible with the disinfectant used and creates a balanced composition. It is important to note that washing should be done with warm water.

8) Cleaning the drinking and feeding system:

First, completely empty, clean and disinfect the drinking system. Using high pressure water, the drinking pipes (PVC nipples) should be cleaned at least once after each breeding period to remove any biofilm and organic matter that may have formed.

If physical cleaning is not possible, use high levels of Lecrofil (140 ppm). Be sure to rinse all drinking lines thoroughly with high pressure water before completing the washing process. Empty, then rinse and disinfect all automatic feeding equipment. Completely empty the hoppers and feeding pipes of feed and clean all openings and remaining feed accumulation areas with a brush. If using old plates, remove all detachable plate components from the hall environment and immerse them in a suitable solution and complete the disinfection. Use spray and gas indoors as much as possible.

9) Disinfection:

Use a certified disinfectant that is effective against specific poultry bacteria and viruses. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Most disinfectants are not effective against coccidiosis-carrying oocysts and the treatment of choice for coccidiosis should be considered by experienced personnel and veterinarians.

It is important to remember that disinfectants are effective in the presence of organic matter and should not be used on wet surfaces as this will dilute them.

10) Spraying and fumigating the house:

If permitted, formalin fumigation should be carried out by trained personnel wearing protective clothing and masks and following safety instructions.

After disinfection of the house and equipment inside the house, fumigation should be carried out as soon as possible. Surfaces should be damp and the house temperature should be at least 21°C (70°F) and the relative humidity should not exceed 65%. Quarantine the house for 24 hours.

Ventilate the hall before re-entry to reduce the level to 2ppm.
After the bed is fully spread, repeat the gassing.

Disinfection and washing of the exterior of the halls

Don’t forget to disinfect and wash the exterior of the halls. The areas around the poultry hall should also be thoroughly washed and disinfected. Special attention should be paid to the areas under the ventilators, inlets and fans of the exit and exhaust doors. Ideally, the external environment around the hall should be enclosed by a wall up to a meter wide. If this wall is not available, the area around the hall should be completely free of vegetation and machinery and equipment and have a suitable drainage surface.

Evaluation and percentage of success of hall disinfection

The effectiveness of your cleaning and disinfection should be measured by laboratory counting and sampling of surfaces after washing for bacteria and salmonella. It should be remembered that if disinfection has been successful and effective. No bacteria and organic matter should be alive in your samples.
